MAIN TASK; FC, CP, DPS MOCK UPS & DRAFTS OF MAGAZINE

MAIN TASK; FRONT COVER FINAL

MAIN TASK; UNMANIPLUATED PHOTOS

1.

2.

3.

4. 1. I will not be using this photo for my magazine because of the low lighting and because it was not a nice medium shot, however it was my first time using a professional camera and found it quiet difficult because I did not know how to really use it until I actually started recognising what some of the buttons means and how I can change the settings.
2. However I will also not be using this picture as well because of the light and the orientation of the way I had taken this picture it would have been a good picture if it was more clear and did not show her shadow, I thought it was a nice picture especially because of the way the ring is standing out but it is not clear and still has low lighting which I struggled with.
3. I will be using this picture because it is nice and clear and shows every details and features of her which I think is perfect for a front cover and which is also a medium shot which is what I need to use for my front cover for a music magazine.
4. I will also be using this picture for the contents page because it is not too bright and not to dark and is eye-catching to my intended audience.

MAIN TASK; MOOD BOARD

Within my mood boards I discovered a direction of style in how I want my magazine to look, it gives me a sense of colour and image of how I want my magazine to be portrayed as which is Soulful R n B Music magazine, this helped me significantly because I was able to have an idea of colours I want to use within my magazine and also the kind of pictures I want to use in order to attract my audience which is R N B and Soulful music lovers.

MAIN TASK; CASE STUDY OF A PUBLISHING HOUSE

Publishing House Case Study

http://condenast.co.uk/
Condé Nast Digital does various magazines such as; Glamour – which states it in the name it is a glamour magazine mainly for women, Tatler, Vanity Fair, Love magazine, Easy Living, Brides Magazine, G&Q -The home of cool stuff, Easy Living and House and Brides magazine, overall all these magazines are mainly target at women and glamour and home whereas there is a few men’s magazine such as G&Q and G&Q style however they various magazines which gives them a wide range of target audience, Conde Nast gets a bigger audience and more clients that may want to join their publishing house that may not be already apart of them e.g. my magazine is a music magazine they do not have any music magazine therefore a client like me maybe interested to join them because they do not have another client that has a music magazine.
Condé Nast Digital also publishes various magazines titles such as;
Ferrari
Baku
Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group
Maybourne Hotel Group
Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks Journal
Condé Nast K magazine
Vertu
Selfridges
Israel: The Hidden Gems
The types of audiences that are targeted by these magazines are vary because they are not all the same so there target audiences will vary;
Ferrari – ‘distributed to Ferrari owners and enthusiasts’ therefore their target market is based on people who own a Ferrari and may be interested in a magazine based on their type of car.
Baku- Baku target market is aimed at people who are interested into global arts, culture and fashion it is however published by the publishing house itself Condé Nast and is also distributed worldwide.
Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group – This is a magazine that is actually published for a hotel which published twice in a year and is aimed at the guests they receive within the hotel.

Maybourne Hotel Group – This is also a hotel and is aimed at the guests that the hotel will receive it is aimed at the guests for Claridge’s.

Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks Journal- This magazine is aimed at business people and their lifestyle magazine and is only published twice a year.

Condé Nast K magazine- This is the publishing house magazine and is aimed at people who like to travel and are interested in their lifestyle and fashion and is distributed international,

Selfridges- This is a magazine target at their consumers and it will be published with other popular titles and is aimed at a lot of people.

Israel: The Hidden Gems- Israel magazine is a side magazine as in it is a coffee table book/magazine therefore it may be aimed at businesses who are interested in fashion, architecture, ancient rituals, travelling and stories from fashion or also aimed at general business that may want magazines for people to read whilst waiting.

They would target different audiences with each magazine that it makes because it would be no use of having the same magazine because it would not be exciting as it would be if you have different audiences whereas because you have a variety you have more to look at and not just one particular audience you have different view of things.
Condé Nast Digital does not do any other business interest except there publishing business I know this because on their home page is says ‘Condé Nast is the world’s leading publisher of upmarket glossy magazines. Our Contract Publishing division works with a number of clients to create beautiful customer magazines that rise above the sea of marketing material received by today’s consumer. We use our editors, creative directors, photographers and writers to create bespoke magazines and coffee table books for hotel groups, retailers and luxury goods houses. We won’t compromise our standards for anybody’, which tell me that they only create beautiful customer magazines and so on therefore my evidence has proved that that this all they specialise in which is contract publishing.

Music keeps her sane and calm she can’t go a day without listening to music and can’t miss an issue of Harmony.

MAIN TASK; AUDIENCE RESEARCH

Overall from the audience research that I did, i found out that I must have a low price because my intended market is young students and majority of them do not work therefore it was a high price it would not be selling because majority of them have low income and said they will pay at least £1.00 for a music magazine, moreover I found out that most of them use twitter therefore I can contact them by using Twitter and promoting it on twitter. I found out that I need to use colours such as red and yellow in order for my magazine to stand out and I also need to have very good picture and people that look good in the camrea e.g Kanye west and Beyonce in order to attract my audience. Moreover I asked them what where do they watch their music videos from and how do they access new music I asked this because I will be able to go on the sites that they have suggested and look at the type of music videos they watch and gain a few Ideas from it and looking at the type of style the videos use.

MAIN TASK; DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD CONVENTIONS DIAGRAM

MAIN TASK; DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD TEXTUAL ANALYSIS

Denotation:
This double page spread is from black and gold January 2009 magazine, and Eva Mendes is being interviewed, there are three images of her, one on the left a full big close up image of her then two small ones in the corner, moreover there is two columns within the double spreaded page one of an introduction and the second other interview. The writing within the magazine is a fair amount and not cluttered together.
Main Image;
The main image of Eva Mendes is the one of her on the page by herself gripping onto her tie; the image is Big Close up where we can see ever detail of her face whereas her hair and shoulder cut off the image. The image she is in blends in with the background which is a white plain back ground and matchers her shirt which is a slightly darker white than the background. However in the image she is grabbing her tie seductively it is in a low angle shot therefore the person taking the camera was slightly leaning to floor and she lifted up her head a bit to make it more effective and connotes that she maybe powerful and feisty, the props such as the ring has also an effective on the picture because she her hand was plain it wouldn’t have a good effective that it has now.
Target Market:
This magazine seems like it aimed at females around 18 +, younger audience would not be interested in Eva Mendez because she is much older than them, and would not be her audience, 18+ seems like a good target audience because she is an actress and maybe a few of her target audience would like to be like her and maybe they are inspired in what she does and want to know more information about her by reading the interview.
Language:
The type of double page spread this is, is a Question and answer page and you can tell the difference because after each question there is a question mark and her answer is smaller and is in italic which is a big difference from the question because the question is also bigger than the answer. The questions are bigger because this helps the audience know what they are talking about in the magazine and the questions maybe interesting and the target audience may always wanted to know her answer to the question so it attracts them to find out, also the language used within the interview is normal simple English that everybody is able to understand and it is more informal because it is an interview and it is her opinion.
There is a quote and the quotation marks have been put in bold and big to emphasis on what she has said and it may be important, it also attracts the audience to read on what she has said, so when they turn the page they see that she has made a comment that may be interesting and in order to find out about it they have to read on.
Moreover the handwriting that is used is serif fonts has small flick ups and connotes tradition her name is the biggest font on the page and takes the widely held of space and stands out clearly on who the page is talking about, however before they start a sentence they have used the letter G as the drop capital which helps the reader know where to start writing first.

MAIN TASK; CONTENTS PAGE CONVENTIONS DIAGRAM

MAIN TASK; FRONT COVER CONVENTIONS DIAGRAM

MAIN TASK; FRONT COVER TEXTUAL ANALYSIS

Denotation

The Magazine cover consists of the colours red and black and Beyonce looking at the camera directly, this photo of Beyonce is a medium long shot because is posing on a plain back ground and it is from her head, arms and waist and does not show the full length of her legs. The background which is behind Beyonce is plain and makes her stand out because nothing is on the background and attracts the audience only to Beyonce. Beyonce name stands out it is in thick black bold BEYONCĖ which is sans serif because it connotes a modern writing. Moreover the barcode is beneath Beyonces’ hand which she is overlapping.

Masthead
Vibe is the masthead for this magazine it stands out bold and strong in RED because red is a very distinctive colour and stands out from the rest although there is red text the VIBe stands out because of the size of the text, which is bigger than the rest. The masthead is a bright red which also connotes enthusiasm and passion for the magazine specifically a music magazine the mast head is also relaxed and plain and does not have a lot of things going on with it, makes it calm and relaxing. Quincy Jones is the person who launched Vibe magazine in 1993 it is one of the most common magazines for urban music magazine in America, moreover the background Vibe magazine always has is a common R and B artist e.g. Beyonce is on this front cover.

Character
The main image is Beyonce who is one of the most known R n B artist and has a lot of fans , she is posed in a very wet and sexy way, which connotes a seductive look her non-verbal communication and her costume gives her a very sexy look which attract her fans and vibe readers to know what it says inside about her and why she is dressed like that which links up with the cover line.

Costume
As I mentioned her costume before it gives her a seductive look and attract the magazines target audience, her black shorts and transparent top is not what you will usually see a woman or girl wearing on a normal day whereas Beyonce is wearing it in a magazine and the audience may want to know why she is wearing that.

Non-Verbal Communication NVC
Her non-verbal communication also her body language which is a sexy pose and touching the walls and looking directly to the camera and her mouth a bit opened which gives it more of seductive pose.

Lighting
The lighting however is really back which goes along because of the background, because the background is plain and white it affects the light and just makes is simple and plain.

Setting
The setting seems like a studio but then again because she has wet sexy look and her hair is wet she maybe be in a bathroom but however there is not items showing where she is.

Cover lines
There are quite a few cover lines but however the main one is ‘Beyonce strips down for summer’ which relates to what she is wearing because she is half naked therefore she has striped down for summer. ten pages of B like you’ve never seen her this attracts the audience to even buy it more because there are ten pages of Beyonce that no one has ever seen her in, which makes them want to buy it and read and look at the pictures from what the cover-live has said. Moreover all city summer guide is also a cover line which tells audience that there is more thank just Beyonce there is also a guide for summer this is evidence that it is soon to be summer or they are in the summer holidays already. Last of all , all the cover lines are in bold and each stand out and they are readable and they are either in red or black.

Target Audience
Looking at all the points I have discovered I think that the target audience for Vibe magazine is people who are mostly interested in R&B and hip-hop music artists, actors and other entertainers, which will be American teens and specifically for this magazine people that are great fans for Beyonce.

PRELIMINARY TASK; FRONT COVER FULL TEXTUAL ANALYSIS.

Task; To complete a FULL textual analysis of a college/educational magazine.

1.Denotation In this front cover of a magazine there is a coach( John Calipari) standing (with a happy smile) with a basketball in his right hand spinning the basketball, the coach is the main image of this magazine the front cover of this magazine has a background of a sport trainer and the magazine has a decent amount of writing and is related to what the coach is wearing.
Connotation The meanings behind the images is that it is sport related, the text and the image match each other, however it says on the top right hand 'recruiting' which tells the audience that it is actually a college for basketball and an American one because it also says 'American Premier Sport Annuals', therefore this means it is aimed at young American males that are interested in Basketball.

2. Mise en scene
Costume: John Calipari is on the magazine front cover has on a basketball player coach kit which relates to the magazine name 'College Basketball' as soon as we look at the image of the model we will know it relates to basketball because the model also has a basketball in in right hand. Props
Props: The prop they used for this magazine was a Basketball with the coach holding it, this is a good prop because it is subject related to what the magazine is about and it gives us a chance to connotes the image because the prop makes it seem like 'yes the coach is ready to train wannabe basketball players'.
Setting: However because this is a college basketball magazine there is not an actual setting, but there is a background which contains of a sport trainer which represents that the magazine is about sports and includes running, it connotes that it includes running and sports because that what trainers are mostly used for.
Lighting: The Lighting in this magazine is calm and bright and does not take over the main pictures that need to be seen, it fits in well with the picture because it is plain and white. Overall it is high key lighting since the magazine background is quite bright itself.
Non-Verbal Communication: The NVC is used very well within this sports magazine because John Calipari is smiling and holding a basketball and it encourages the target audience to come and join, and that is also fun and educational at the same time.

3. Anchorage and masthead

This magazine has fonts of sans serif and has a lot of writing , well not too much just the right amount of writing and it all relates to the topic which is basketball, the masthead which is 'college basketball' and is the visual branding of the magazine title which stands out because it is in Thick Italic text and has outlines of black and white.
4. Magazine Conventions

The college basketball magazine has a dateline underneath the masthead which says '2009-10 preview' so this tells us it is like an prospects as well as an educational magazine, however it also has a date on where the bar code is, it says 'display until Dec 18, 2009' so this tells me it is a yearly magazine that recruits every year. Main Image; The main image in this case is the coach which stands out and it is the first image you will see if you picked up this magazine and then also gives us an idea it is based on sports or more specifically basketball because John Calipari is the head of Kentucky basketball team. Main Cover line There is only one main cover line which is 'the cult of calipar' which is nice and big, bigger than the other text around it, and it also fills in the audience on what the magazine may be about. Left Third The left third is not a lot it is quick and bold and easy to read and states extra things that are within the magazine, it is on the right hand side of the magazine and just has basics text. Bar code The bar code is at the bottom of the front cover and includes how much it is and say USA which means it is USA Dollars and should be sold in USA. Selling Line The selling line is 'conference previews, Anthlons field of 65 and recruiting, this is a selling line because it not only says that they are recruiting but has the ranking of basketball inside the magazine. The Website link is underneath the date which is; AthhlonSport.com

COSTUME Henry Walton is dressed as an Character called Indiana Jones, which is wearing a brown and khaki worn out shirt which is rolled up and the trousers he wears has a belt which has different compartments in them. Henry Walton is dressed up an an archaeologist which is what he is supposed to be but no ordinary one because he has a whip. PROPS Attached to his trousers is a waist belt which contains a gun and in his left hand he is holding a whip and in his right hand his fist is clenched up showing he is a very tough character and his on a serious adventure. The props he has shows that he may be on a dangerous job so he need protection (the gun) this also shows it is an action film and he will be on a mission bound to find something. NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION Looking at the poseter it shows Henry is represting a bulky hench charcther which shows his tough guy and will never back down on any type of adventure he goes on and he is determined to find what he came there for. His face expression is so serious not a slight smile its straightforward showing his not there to joke about business means business to him. And as I said before his hands clenched shwoing his more than ready for the mission. LIGHTING There is a mixture of lighting which contains low key lighting and high kety lighting. Low key because he left and right side is quite dark and then when it gets to the back its really bright and even contains a shadow of his position. SETTING The setting of the poster is in a caved shaped and contains a lot of rocks and has quiet a few steps leading to the firery crystal skull, which makes the setting look interesting and makes you want to know why it is there and whats going on. ANCHORAGE The title has a comic font (seriff fonts)the headig is staight forward sans serif. The title 'Indiana Jones goes from big to smile and stands out very well because of the colour and the heading is also stands out because of the glowing colour and attracts people to read it.

Induction; Re-Creation of a movie Magazine Front Cover

Never used Photo-shop adobe CS3 in MY LIFE before still learning how to use it, found it difficult. I learnt a few things by fiddling with it at home and this was the result after 6days of learning.
Used the Move tool a lot which helped me a lot to move things around, also used quiet a few layers to create new things which made it easier because if I wanted to delete something I didn't need to delete the whole section, I just click on the layer and removed what I didn't want.
The Rectangle tool helped me so much because I thought I had to make the rectangle for the blue cross myself but when I fiddled a bit and realised there was an actual tool that you can use and just fill it in with the colour you want, which made life so much easier for me.
The bar code is missing because I struggled with it and did not know how to rotate it, which I hope to learn in the future.
Determined to learn more skills and get better with
Adobe Photo shop.
